The Positive Impact of Libraries in the Age of Technology

In an age where nearly every question can be answered by Google, every book downloaded in seconds, and audiobooks streamed on the go, it’s fair to ask: Do libraries still matter?

After speaking with librarians and library users at the Laconia Public Library in 2019, the answer is clear. Libraries remain a vital part of the communities they serve, offering resources that go far beyond books on a shelf. In fact, today’s libraries contribute to positive outcomes for both adults and students, bridging gaps in access to technology, information, and safe spaces.

Libraries now serve as community hubs for learning, technology access, and connection. For students, they offer reliable internet, quiet places to study, and environments that encourage curiosity and collaboration. For adults, libraries provide critical access to technology, job resources, educational programming, and opportunities to engage with others in meaningful ways.

In producing this audio story, I had the chance to speak with librarians and patrons who shared how these spaces continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of their communities. What emerged was not just a story about libraries, but a story about resilience, adaptation, and the importance of human connection in an increasingly digital world.
