Capturing Moments That Matter: Audio & Video Storytelling at Taylor Community

At Taylor Community, storytelling often comes to life through everyday moments of connection, gratitude, and community. One of my favorite examples of this was the opportunity to create both an audio and video piece in celebration of National First Responders Day on October 28, 2021.

The event, held on Taylor’s Laconia campus, was more than just a celebration — it was a heartfelt expression of gratitude. Organized by Taylor resident Anne Marie Murray and supported by fellow residents and staff, the day featured a special parade of first responders arriving on campus. Police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and other emergency personnel were welcomed with cheers, handmade signs, and heartfelt thanks from the community.

My role for this project went beyond simple documentation. I was tasked with capturing the spirit of the day through both photography and multimedia storytelling. This meant not only photographing the event but also creating both an audio recording and a short video that preserved the voices and energy of those who participated — from Anne Marie herself to the first responders and Taylor residents who came out to show their appreciation.

The resulting video piece highlights the arrival of first responders, the joyful reception, and the sense of connection shared that day. The accompanying audio recording weaves together reflections from residents, organizers, and first responders, offering a more personal, narrative-driven perspective on why moments like this matter — not just to those who serve, but to the communities they protect.

Projects like this remind me why audio and video storytelling is so powerful. It gives life to moments of gratitude, preserves voices that might otherwise go unheard, and creates lasting artifacts that communities can revisit and share. It’s not just about capturing what happened — it’s about telling the story of why it mattered.

If you’d like to hear the voices from this day and see the impact for yourself, you can listen to the audio story and watch the video below.
